“MujerArtes Cooperative de Esperanza” is one of the programs sponsored by the nonprofit, Esperanza Peace and Justice, and operates in San Antonio’s westside. There are currently thirteen artists that the nonprofit sponsors, providing the space and material to create in the back building of the community space. The women of MujerArtes recently completed works celebrating the Día de Los Muertos through creating ornaments, jewelry, and small sculptures.

While I was visiting, the artists were already beginning their next project. Ana Uviedo, who has been with MujerArtes for over fifteen years, explained to me that each artist was required to contribute 12 tiles to the upcoming Peace Market at the Esperanza Center that will be held on Black Friday. Graciela Sanchez shared how MujerArtes gave her the opportunity to continue practicing art. The proceeds from the sales of their works are split between the artist and reinvesting back into the program to continue to supply the material and space to the artists.

The clay works celebrating the Día de los Muertos will be exhibited this week in the MujerArtes studio space through November 8, and are available for purchase. When you stop by, be mindful of the workers as they construct ofrendas (altars) for the community celebration and procession they are hosting on November 1. The center encourages you to bring a flower, candle, or photograph of a loved one to add to the ofrenda, and celebrate Día de Los Muertos this Friday with guest writer, Madison Vrazel, the women of MujerArtes, and the community. The celebration starts at 5PM located at 816 S. Colorado St., San Antonio, Texas, 78207.
